HOT SNAPS — BETA 1.0.224 (build 224)
================================================

Hot Snaps moves and resizes windows with keyboard shortcuts: halves, thirds,
quarters, sixths and more, on any size of display. Thanks for testing it!

Needs macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later.

1. INSTALL
----------
1. Double-click the zip file if it hasn't unzipped already. You'll get
   "Hot Snaps.app".
2. Drag "Hot Snaps.app" into your Applications folder.
3. Open it from Applications.

It opens straight away: this build is notarized by Apple.

2. LET IT MOVE WINDOWS (ACCESSIBILITY)
--------------------------------------
Hot Snaps needs Accessibility access to move windows and to catch its
shortcuts. The first time it opens, macOS asks for this:

1. Click "Open System Settings" (or use the button in the Hot Snaps window).
2. In Privacy & Security > Accessibility, turn on "Hot Snaps".
Enter your password or use Touch ID if asked.
3. Go back to Hot Snaps. The yellow warning disappears within a couple of
seconds, and the shortcuts start working. There's no need to restart it.

3. IF YOU USE ANOTHER WINDOW SNAPPING APP
-----------------------------------------
If BetterSnapTool, Rectangle, Magnet, Moom or a similar app is running,
Hot Snaps will warn you. Quit one of them, and turn off its login item
(System Settings > General > Login Items) so the two don't fight.

4. USING IT
-----------
- Every shortcut is your Hot Snaps modifier keys plus one key. The modifiers
start as Option (⌥) + Command (⌘): for example, ⌥⌘← puts the window you're
using on the left half of the screen.
- To use different modifiers, click the big ⌥⌘ panel on the Global tab,
then hold 2 or 3 of Shift, Control, Option and Command. Click outside
the panel when you're done. All the shortcuts switch to the new modifiers.
- The Hot Snaps window shows every layout and a keyboard map of all the
shortcuts. Try them on the Hot Snaps window itself to learn them.
- The ? button at the top of the Hot Snaps window (or Help > Hot Snaps
  Manual) opens the manual.
- Click a shortcut on a card (or a key on the keyboard map)
to change its key, then type the new key. Esc cancels; Delete clears.
- ← and → switch between the tabs while the Hot Snaps window is in front.
- Click the top of the Hot Snaps window (its title bar, or anywhere in
the header that isn't a button) to put the window back to its normal size.
It also opens at its normal size: when Hot Snaps starts, and when you
reopen the window after closing or minimising it.
- "Reset Hotkeys to Defaults…" (in the Hot Snaps menu) puts every key and the
  modifiers back to the defaults.
- "Centre" (C) puts the window in the middle of the display, keeping its
  size.
- "Focus on this" (F) centres the window you're using and
minimises all the others. It's one-way: bring windows back from the Dock
  when you want them.
- "Undo" (Z) puts the last window Hot Snaps moved back where it was, up to 10
moves back; "Redo" (X) moves it again. Redo is greyed out on the keyboard
when there's nothing to redo. Undo only moves windows: after "Focus on
this", the minimised windows stay in the Dock.
- Multi-window: hold the Globe key (🌐, also called fn) as well as your
modifiers, then press any layout key. The app you're using fills that
layout with its windows: two for halves, three for thirds, four for
quarters, up to eight for eighths. The window you're using goes where the
key says, then the app's other windows on that display; if there aren't
enough, the app opens new ones. This works in apps that can open new
windows, like Finder, Safari, Terminal and TextEdit: while you hold the
keys in one of them, every square on the keyboard map lights up. Undo
puts the windows that were already open back; new windows stay open.
- In any other app, hold your Hot Snaps modifiers (⌥⌘) for a moment and the
keyboard map appears at the bottom of the screen, so you can see which key
does what. Let go and it disappears. A window you snap behind it shows
on top for half a second, then the keyboard fades back over it. Turn
this off with "Keyboard Overlay" in the Hot Snaps window (or its menu
  bar icon).
- Hot Snaps' shortcuts win over other apps' shortcuts that use the same keys.
- Closing the window doesn't stop Hot Snaps: the shortcuts keep working.
Use the Hot Snaps icon in the menu bar to reopen the window or quit.
- "Start at Login" opens Hot Snaps automatically when you log in. It's on for
a new install; turn it off or on in the window, the menu bar icon, or the
  Hot Snaps menu.
- "Show in Menu Bar" and "Show in Dock" (in the menu bar icon or the Hot Snaps
menu) hide either icon. One of them always stays, so you can get back.
- Default App Snaps (the last tab, the grid of apps): choose where an app
opens. Choose the app (scroll the list, or type its name), the display if
you have more than one, and "Open in multiple windows" if the app can.
Then click the key for the position. From then on, whenever that app opens,
its window goes there (or its windows fill the layout), and so does every
new window it opens (with multiple windows, into a part of the layout that's
free). The list beside shows every app you've set: the pencil changes one,
  the bin removes it.

Default shortcuts (all with your modifiers, ⌥⌘ to start with):
Global ......... C centre, < previous display, > next display,
Return maximise, F focus on this, Z undo, X redo
  Halves ......... ← left, → right
  Two-Thirds ..... - left two-thirds, + right two-thirds (the = key)
  Thirds ......... 1 left, 2 centre, 3 right

Quarters ....... Q top left, W top right, A bottom left, S bottom right

  Up-Down Two-Thirds O top two-thirds, L bottom two-thirds
  Up-Down Thirds . 4 top, E centre, D bottom
Multi-window ... hold 🌐 too, then any layout key

5. UPDATING TO A NEW BETA
-------------------------
Hot Snaps checks gothicworkshop.com for a new beta each time it opens
(including at login), and every minute while its window is in front. If
there is one, it shows what's changed since your version: click "Download"
and it installs the new beta and reopens, or "Not Now" to be asked next
time Hot Snaps opens. To check at any time, choose "Check for Beta Update…"
in the Hot Snaps menu or from the menu bar icon. The check sends nothing
about you.

To update by hand instead:
1. Quit Hot Snaps: click its icon in the menu bar and choose Quit Hot Snaps.
2. Unzip the new version and drag "Hot Snaps.app" into Applications.
   Choose "Replace" when asked.
3. Open it again.

Keep the name "Hot Snaps.app" and keep it in Applications: that way macOS
keeps its Accessibility permission and your Start at Login setting, and your
custom shortcuts are kept too. (Every build is signed by the same developer,
so macOS treats it as the same app.)

If the shortcuts stop working after an update:
System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility: select Hot Snaps,
click the minus (–) button to remove it, then open Hot Snaps again and
turn it back on when asked.

6. UNINSTALLING
---------------
Quit Hot Snaps from its menu bar icon, then move "Hot Snaps.app" from
Applications to the Bin. You can also remove it from
System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility.

7. FEEDBACK
-----------
Please tell us what worked, what didn't, and which apps (if any) didn't
snap properly. Screenshots help. Email info@gothicworkshop.com.
Thank you!
